Dubai continues to develop at a rapid pace, and the latest addition to the city's impressive infrastructure is the Blue Metro Line. This ambitious project is not only aimed at reducing traffic congestion but also at providing a direct connection to Dubai International Airport. Here is everything you need to know about the new Blue Metro Line.
Overview of the Blue Metro Line
The new Blue Metro Line is a Dh18 billion ($4.9 billion) investment and will consist of 14 new stations adding 30 km to the current metro network. As much as 15.5 km of this line will run underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which prioritises improving commuting for the city's rapidly growing population.
Where does the Blue Metro Line go?
The Blue Metro Line will connect five key urban areas of Dubai:
- Bur Dubai/Deira
- Downtown/Business Bay
- Dubai Silicon Oasis
- Dubai Marina/JBR
- Expo City Dubai
Once the line is completed, Dubai's metro network will be 131 km long, with 78 stations served by 168 trains.
The routes of the Blue Metro Line
The Blue Metro Line consists of two main routes connecting to the existing Red and Green lines.
· First Route: Starting at Al Jaddaf at the Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line, it crosses Dubai Creek via a 1.3 km bridge and passes through new stations at Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor, before reaching Dubai International City 1. This route continues to Dubai International City 2 and 3, ending at Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City. This route covers 21 km and has 10 stations.
· Second Route: Connects to the Red Line at Al Rashidiya at the Centrepoint Interchange Station. This route continues to new stations at Mirdif and Al Warqaa, then connects to the interchange station at Dubai International City 1. This route is 9 km long and has 4 stations.
Travel time between these destinations is estimated at 10 to 25 minutes.
Notable stations
While the station designs will largely be in line with the current metro, there are two noteworthy stations:
- Dubai Creek Harbour Station: This iconic station will feature a striking architectural design that complements the surrounding modern residential and commercial towers.
- International City Underground Station: With a surface area of 44,000 square metres, this will be the largest underground interchange station in the network, designed to handle approximately 350,000 passengers daily.
Long-term benefits
While the project costs Dh18 billion, the RTA expects it to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits:
- Reduced Traffic Congestion: The project will reduce traffic on the routes by 20%.
- Property Value Increase: The value of land and properties near the stations is expected to rise by 25%.
- Passenger Numbers: The Blue Metro Line is expected to carry 200,000 passengers per day by 2030, increasing to 320,000 per day a decade later.
Execution timeline
Construction of the Blue Metro Line begins in 2024, with completion planned for 2029, just in time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro. Initial trials are expected in 2028, with the line entering service the following year.
Conclusion
The introduction of the Blue Metro Line marks an important step in the ongoing development of Dubai's public transport network. This new line will not only make travel easier but also contribute to the overall urban development of the city. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project and the many benefits it will bring for both residents and visitors of Dubai.
